Original price per loaf = $1.99
Loaves per month = 22
Original monthly expenditure = 1.99*22= 44 (approx)

New price per loaf = $2.49
New monthly expenditure =2.49*22=54.78 =55 approx

Percentage increase in family’s monthly expenditure = 100*(55-44)/44=100(11/44)=25 %

Official Explanation

Find the percent change in the prices by finding the change or difference in the prices and dividing this by the original price:



This rounds to x = 25%. The number of loaves the family buys per month, 22, does not matter when considering the percentage change in the family’s bill for bread.

Answer: 25%
