If \(x\neq{y}\) and \(y = \frac{x^2 - y^2}{x-y}\), then what is the value of \(y\)?
Given \(y = \frac{x^2 - y^2}{x-y}\).
Simplify: \(y = \frac {(x - y)(x+y)}{x-y}\).
Reduce by x-y: \(y=x+y\).
So, we have that \(x=0\).
(1) \(x+y-3=0\). Since \(x=0\), then \(y=3\). Sufficient.
(2) \(x(y-3)=0\). Since \(x=0\), then \(y\) can take ANY value. Not sufficient.
Answer: A
Given \(y = \frac{x^2 - y^2}{x-y}\).

Simplifying the equation in the question:
y = (x - y)(x + y)/(x - y)
As, x - y ≠ 0, we can cancel x - y
So, y = x + y
Hence, x = 0
Considering statement (1)
x + y = 3
As x = 0, y = 3
SUFFICIENT
Considering statement (2)
x(y - 3) = 0
As x = 0, y can take any value.
INSUFFICIENT
Hence, the answer is (A)
y = (x - y)(x + y)/(x - y)
As, x - y ≠ 0, we can cancel x - y
So, y = x + y
Hence, x = 0
Considering statement (1)
x + y = 3
As x = 0, y = 3
SUFFICIENT
Considering statement (2)
x(y - 3) = 0
As x = 0, y can take any value.
INSUFFICIENT
Hence, the answer is (A)
