If x is an integer, what is the value of x?
(1) 2x - 3 < 5
(2) -4x < -8
(1) 2x - 3 < 5
(2) -4x < -8
My answer:
1) Not sufficient : 2x < 8, x could be 2*1=2<8, 2*3=6<8
2) x > 2, could be everything
1 and 2 combined: x=3 => C.
Am I right?

If x is an integer, what is the value of x?
(1) 2x - 3 < 5 --> 2x < 8 --> x < 4. Not sufficient.
(2) -4x < -8 --> reduce by -4 and flip the sign: x > 2. Not sufficient.
(1)+(2) We have that 2 < x < 4 and since we are told that x is an integer, then x = 3. Sufficient.
Answer: C.

S1: 2x - 3 < 5
ie. 2x < 8
ie. x < 4 Now x can take any value less than 4 like 1,2,3 ..-1, -2 etc..we take integer values only as it is given x is an integer.
so S1 alone is not sufficient.
S2: -4x < -8
Multiply both sides by -1 and changing the inequality sign.
Note:Multiplying or dividing both sides of an equation by a negative number changes the inequality of the equation
so 4x > 8.
ie. x>2 Now x can be 3, 4, 5, 6...etc.we take integer values only as it is given x is an integer.
So S2 alone is not sufficient.
Combining S1& S2 together we have that 2 < x < 4 the only integral value of x in this range is x = 3.
This is Sufficient.
Option C is the answer.
