So using both, we can say that Y is definitely greater than 1

This doesnt necessarily mean that y is > 1. Eg y could be 0.5 or 2. Insufficient
(2) y^2 - 4 > 0 or y^2 > 4
range of values of y that satisfy this inequality are: y > 2 and y < -2
So if y is positive it has to be > 2 and if y is negative is has to be < -2
This doesnt tell us whether y is > 1 or not. Insufficient
Combining the two statements, y is > 0 so y must be > 2, this means it has to be > 1 also. Sufficient
Hence C answer
