For x, y , z to form a triangle.
x has to be greater than z - y & less than z + y. ( otherwise there will not be a triangle possible, the sum of two sides of a triangle must be greater than the third)
We also know z > y
(1) Gives us value of y. Hence x is bound by : z - 5 < x < z + 5 Hence Insufficient as we do not know z.
(2) Gives us value of z. Hence x is bound by : 17 - y < x < 17 + y Hence Insufficient as we do not know what y is and lower bound is undefined.
(1) + (2) : Bounds on x are : 17 - 5 < x < 17 + 5
12 < x < 22
Hence x < j so 12 < j Suff
Hence Option (C) is our answer.
