86 people attended the screening of a movie. If the number of males liking the movie was less than the number of females liking the movies, how many people liked the movie?
(1) The ratio of the number of males who liked the movie to the number of males who did not like the movie is 3:4
(2) The ratio of the number of females who liked the movie to the number of females who did not like the movie is 4:1

If we can divide the men in a 3:4 ratio, the total number of men must be a multiple of 3+4 = 7. Similarly if we can divide the women in a 4:1 ratio, the total number of women must be a multiple of 5.
When we subtract the number of men, a multiple of 7, from 86, we get the number of women, which needs to be a multiple of 5. By testing values, the number of men can only be 21 (which gives us 65 women) or 56 (which gives us 30 women). But if we have 56 men, then (3/7)(56) = 24 men liked the movie, and (4/5)(30) = 24 women liked the movie. That can't be the case, because we know fewer men than women liked the movie. So the only possibility is that we have 21 men and 65 women, from which we can answer any question.

Once you reach here, you should be suspicious and try to find out a unique solution to this equation. Turns out x=8 and y=5 works.
You can complete the 2*2 table of Male,Female,Like, and Dislike and answer the question.
