What is the ratio of x to y?
(1) The ratio of x to 2y is 4:3
(2) The ratio of 3x to y is 8:1
ASIDE: Students may find it easier to answer this question if they express the ratios as fractions.
So for example, rather than ask for the ratio x to y (or x : y), we can ask for the ratio x/y Target question: what is the value of x/y? Statement 1: The ratio of x to 2y is 4:3 In other words: x/2y = 4/3
From here, if we multiply both sides of the equation by 2 we get: 2x/2y = 8/3
And if we simplify the left side we get:
x/y = 8/3Since we can answer the
target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: The ratio of 3x to y is 8:1In other words: 3x/y = 8/1
From here, if we multiply both sides of the equation by 1/3 we get: 3x/3y = 8/3
And if we simplify the left side we get:
x/y = 8/3Since we can answer the
target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
