If z is the sum of three consecutive odd positive integers, is z evenly divisible by 9?
(1) When the smallest of the three numbers is divided by 3, the remainder is 1.
(2) The smallest of the three numbers is divisible by 7.

statement 1:
smallest number be x, when divided by 3 leaves remainder 1.
x = 3*k + 1
three numbers: 3*k+1, 3*k+3, 3*k+5
sum = 9*k + 9; it is divisible by 9
sufficient
statement 2:
smallest number when divided by 7 leaves remainder 0.
x = 7*k
three numbers: 7*k, 7*k+2, 7*k+4
sum = 21*k + 6 = 3(7*k + 2); this will not be always divisible by 9.
it depends on the value of k.

First of all let’s think on how to rewrite the question.
z=a+b+c in which b=a+2
c=a+4
a is odd.
So z= 3a+6
The question asks if z is divisible by 9
1)If a is divided by 3 the reminder is 1 We will put a=7 and obtain z = 27 ; it is divisible We will put a=15 and obtain z = ; it. Is divisible We can continue for how many examples as we want the result will be the same because what speaking “in algebraic” we are searching if 3*(3n+1) +6 = 9n + 9 is divisible by 9. It will ever be. 2)a is a multiple of 7 We will put a=7 and obtain z=27 ; it is divisibile We will put a=21 and obtain z=69 ; it is not divisible. So this information is not sufficient to solve the problem [Answer A]
