What is the value of x + y ?
(1) x − y = 1
cant say the value of x + y insufficient
(2) x = 3 − y
or, x + y =3 sufficient
correct answer B

Beware of the C trap!
Remember that, to find the value of x+y, you don’t have to find x and y individually (which is a trap that lot of test takers fall for).
From statement I alone, x-y = 1. This is insufficient to find the value of x+y.
Answer options A and D can be eliminated. Possible answer options are B, C or E.
At this stage, you are probably thinking, “Okay, the first statement was insufficient because it had two unknowns. So I need one more independent equation to find out the values of x and y which will help me find x+y”. And then you see statement II and feel “Wow, here’s just the equation I was looking for” and you go ahead and mark C, falling into a beautifully set trap.
Remember, you combine statements only after testing the statements individually.
From statement II alone, x = 3 – y. Reorganising, x+y = 3.
Bottomline – statement II doesn’t need the help of statement I to establish the value of x+y. Statement II alone is sufficient.
Answer options C and E can be eliminated. The correct answer option is B.
