What is the measure of angle A?
(1) Angle B and angle C are complementary (complementary angles are two angles that add up to 90°).
(2) Angle B = 30°

Target question: What is the measure of angle A?
Statement 1: Angle B and angle C are complementary (complementary angles are two angles that add up to 90°)
In other words B + C = 90
Since angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees, we can write: A + B + C = 180
Substitute to get: A + 90 = 180
Solve: A = 90
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: Angle B = 30°
There are several scenarios that satisfy statement 2. Here are two:
Case a: A = 60, B = 30 and C = 90. In this case, the answer to the target question is angle A is 60 degrees
Case b: A = 70, B = 30 and C = 80. In this case, the answer to the target question is angle A is 70 degrees
Since we can’t answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: A
