Statement 1: |x − 9| = 2
If |x − 9| = 2, then EITHER x − 9 = 2 OR x − 9 = -2
Let's examine both cases:
Case a: If x − 9 = 2, then x = 11. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 6
Case b: If x − 9 = -2, then x = 7. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 6
So it must be the case that x is greater than 6
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
