Target question: Is x > 0?
Statement 1: x² − 8x + 16 = 0
Factor to get (x - 4)(x - 4) = 0
So, it must be the case that x = 4, which means the answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 0
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: x² − x - 12 = 0
Factor to get (x - 4)(x + 3) = 0
So, EITHER x = 4 OR x = -3
Case a: If x = 4, the answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 0
Case b: If x = -3, the answer to the target question is NO, x is not greater than 0
Since we can’t answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT
