Target question: What is the value of x?
Statement 1: 12x + 4y = 4(21 + y)
STRATEGY: Some students will look at this equation and conclude (incorrectly) that we have a linear equation with two variables, which means there are infinitely many solutions, which means statement 1 is not sufficient. However, we will find that, if we simplify the equation, we can actually solve for x.
Expand the right side of the equation: 12x + 4y = 84 + 4y
Subtract 4y from both sides: 12x = 84
Solve: x = 7
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: y = 12
Obviously NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: A
