To begin, since w, x and y are the three angles in a triangle we know that: w + x + y = 180
Target question: What is the value of x?
Statement 1: w + y = 118
Take: w + x + y = 180
Rearrange: (w + y) + x = 180
Replace w + y with 118 to get: (118) + x = 180
Solve to get: x = 62
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: 2y - w = 56
Solve for w to get: w = 2y - 56
Replace w with 2y - 56 to get: 2y - 56 + y + x = 180
As we can see, there is no way to solve for the value of x
Since we can’t answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: A

Step 1: Analyse Question Stem
A triangle is given with three interior angles as w, x and y degrees respectively. We can say that the sum of these angles is equal to 180 degrees, therefore,
x + y + w = 180
Let us name this as equation 1.
We need to find the value of x.
Step 2: Analyse Statements Independently (And eliminate options) – AD / BCE
Statement 1: w + y = 118
We can substitute the value of this expression in equation 1 and upon doing so, we see that the value of x can be calculated.
Statement 1 is sufficient, answer options B, C and E can be eliminated.
Statement 2: 2y – w = 56
The above equation can be modified and written as w = 2y – 56. Substituting this value of w in equation 1,
x + y + 2y – 56 = 180
which can be simplified to x + 3y = 236.
This is a linear equation in 2 unknowns. We need another independent equation to solve for the values of x and y. Therefore, the information given in statement 2 is insufficient.
Statement 2 is insufficient, answer option D can be eliminated.
The correct answer option is A.
