Question: |x - y| = ?
What is the distance between x and y?
Statement 1
(1) x and y are integers
x and y can be any integer. Hence, the distance between x and y is not fixed. Therefore, we can eliminate A and D.
Statement 2
(2) xy = 5
Case 1: x = 1/2; y = 10 → Distance between x and y = 9.5
Case 2: x = 1; y = 5 → Distance between x and y = 4
As we are getting two conflicting results, we can conclude that the statement is not sufficient on its own. We can eliminate B.
Combined
The statements combined can point out the following values of x and y
Case 1: x = 1 ; y = 5 → Distance between x and y = 4
Case 2: x = -1 ; y = -5 → Distance between x and y = 4
Hence, the statements combined are sufficient.
