I guess it could do as well as a great toefl score could do if you are not a native speaker. Anyway in your case I think that a 22 is to low to be balanced with AWA, even perfect (congrats !). I discuss that point with a coach last week cause I had a good AWA and average verbal at my first session and he told me AWA could be helpful when your verbal is from roughly speaking 33 to 37 and that you will not retake the test. Above awa is a plus, adcom focus being more on the verbal percentile...
I am not sure why my verbal scores were low. But a few replies posted in this query made me realize that too many guesses (About 8) were the reason. I was pretty confident that I almost nailed the first few questions. May be thats how bad my intuition is!
And as far as AWA is concerned, I spent a few minutes trying to jot down the ideas and atleast wrote 5 paragraphs. I felt that I did pretty good...but didnt expect a 6.0. May be the AWA ratings does reward a marginally good performance better than the Verbal Section does.
