I am applying to a state school and they look for a GMAT score of above 400. I have been out of college for only a year, but I must admit that I have forgotten a lot my basic math skills. I would need to refresh them to an extent.

Anyway, I wanted to know how realistic it would be to assume that with minimal studying I could score over a 400. What do you think? This forum is making me think that even with a bunch of studying I might not make a 400.

Background: Again, out of school for only a year. Cum. GPA 3.92...I do not test well in these types of tests (ACT, SAT). I think I'm just book smart.

I would suggest you to first do a diagnostic test and rate your self. Then work on your weak areas. Everthing is achievable. I have seen people improving 200 points (Many examples here on the GMATCLUB). Minimum score anybody can get is 200 and you may improve 200 more points, that makes it 400. So don't worry. Best part is you are out of school for only 1 year. I am out of school for more than 5 years.

GMAT doesn't test quantity, it tests quality. How much you study doesn't matter: what matters is how you study.

Do you have a suggestion on the best self assessment test to take. Since I'm planning a wedding right now, I would definitely need a free one :)

This contains 2 tests. I would suggest that first make yourself comfortable with the question types of GMAT in a day or two using some book or this website. Then try one test.

I think I already downloaded that software. Is it off of gmat.com? I think the two sites are linked somehow.

Yes they are. if you downloaded free gmatprep test from any of those sites, then it is Gmatprep.
