You do not have to hit save after each AWA. I was proofreading my first essay this week and forgot to check the time and it expired. However I still received a 6.0 out of 6.0 or 95th percentile! I did freak out and ask the woman in the back room after the AWA section and she also stated that the system saves whatever was written automatically if "Next" is not clicked on.
