There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
I took my GMAT today, after about a weeks preperation. I got a 560 (Q38,V29), which is a big let down, as I did way better than that on the practise tests, especially in the verbal section. I not exactly sure what happened.
If I were to retake the GMAT, would it mean that I am out of the league of the top 20 schools?
If you retake it and nail it then it wont affect your ability to get into a top 20 school. If you don't retake it then your chances at a top school will be really slim.
If you know that you can do better then study up and go for it. There is a lot of advice on here from tons people who have raised their scores by 100+ points so its doable. Some of these same people are also going to some very good schools.

I might be misinterpreting you, but did you only study for a week?

umm. did you only prep for a week? how many CATs could you possibly do in a week?
well, if you *did* only prep for a week, you should be able to break through 700 barrier. give it another whirl. set aside two solid months of prep, and i raelly think you can reach a 700 or pretty damn close
