Hi Rob,

don't despair. Firstly, A famous quote i read somewhere was "to do well, surround yourself by good people" and by being on this forum, you have done so. Secondly, the Kaplan test is not an accurate predictor of where how good you are and on this forum, the Kaplan material are referred to as "Kraplan". So to start studying properly, get some more reputed books/guides and start participating on the forums.

You will get more into it as a little time goes by. We all started somewhere sometime.

Most importantly, make GMAT fun and it won't be as daunting.

Advice ? throw the kaplan CD in the rubbish bin. That's what I did. This place is full of people who got a score of 500 odd in kaplan and ended up with a 700+ score in the real thing thereafter.

Another advice - trying taking the gmatprep (the official software from mba.com). That is a much better indicator of you actual level. Then assess your weak areas and focus your preparation on those. Keep visiting the verbal and quant forums and participate.

I was in the same boat as you. I took a Kaplan practice test and scored 570 and was completely depressed since I was shooting for over 700. I think I just stopped myself from kicking a wall, but couldn't myself from eating quite a bit of ice cream. I've scored between 690 & 730 on the MGMAT & GMATPrep tests, so I don't think it's representative. Part of it I think is just what kind of mood you are in when you take the test. If I'm tired the score is lower, not surprising. Speaking of, I just started my new schedule of waking up at 6 in the morning in preparation for my test in a month. I work about 5 miles from work and usually roll out of bed around 8 and go right to work, so this is killing me :twisted:

If you're lazy, are you sure b-school is for you? ;-)

Seriously, though, while some b-schools aren't that rigorous, it's quite a lot of work, so if you just can't get motivated to tackle the GMAT, you might want to rethink it. Granted, the GMAT sucks, but the first year of b-school classes aren't any more exciting than the GMAT, so think carefully about that!
