so horrible that this has happened, after all the hard work and prep, don't let this get to you, though its hard not to, try approaching gmac, also send them an email/fax keep a copy in case you need to get the lawyer volved, hope it doesn't come to it.

oh yeah if you go lawyer route be aware how much they are charging. it is 250$ but if the lawyer charges way more then it is not worth it. But again I think gmac is an honest organization and it will do the right thing. good luck!

Back up your claim with documented proof that in all official documents you are known only as sushma (passport, visa, driving license, educational certificates etc.) I am sure the folks at GMAT will understand.

They have clearly mentioned that your name should match exactly with the name on the ID proof. In India only passport is Valid, thus you should have used exactly the same name.

Do not take me wrong but Gmac won't help you out in this matter. They will simply say , its your mistake you should have read all the terms and conditions.

Still try calling Gmac and request them, that is the only way.

I wonder: When you filled out your registration at GMAC for your test, did it let you fill the form without mentioning a last name? If it didn't, then you can argue with GMAC saying that you didn't have a last name and so on.

But as gurpreet says, they might be honest but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get your money back.

I'd say approach them with the mentality that nothing's gonna come out of it. That way if they don't refund or let you retake, you didn't lose anything but if they do let you, then good. Sorry about that. Don't let it get to you! :)

I think you have a good case and I would not let them get away - I would also like to know what they would recommend for the future. Also, would the system allow you to fill out an application without a last name?

Even i had the same problem while registering for the test..then when i verified my passport it had my fathers name in last name..had to fill in the same...but all my other documents dont have my fathers name in it,if they had asked for another proof they would have rejected it as well,,,IT happens a lot in India as people dont have a last name...

I wish you get a refund or You are allowed to retake the exam...

HI Sushma,
really sad to know..But i think GMAC wont help u much in this issue. They have clearly mentioned in their terms and conditions..even One of my close friend has gone thru same issue the only problem in her name was one word wrongly typed while registering for the GMAT..They simply sent her back...They Have clearly stated Name and Date of Birth should match with ur ID proof ....

@BB yeah we can Register without last name no issues ,i just tried out again for clarifying....

Thanx

It is a god idea to check if you can register without your last name if Last name is a required field you have a case. Else I think there may be an issue. You can request them but I highly doubt much will happen. 250 is a lot of money so plead to get another date instead of other options. THats is my 2 cents

I actually had the same experience. I have a full name but usually just go by the shorter version of my name which is what I use on alot of official documents. I registered for the exam with the shorter version of my name, but when I showed up for the exam with my driver's license the proctor said I could not take the exam. I was sooo shocked and dismayed. He gave me the number to gmac and I called them immediately. I spoke to the customer service person and then to a manager and they would not budge. I was totally upset. I was explaining to them, while crying of course, but they would not even give me a discount towards another exam. But what really sucks is that my passport has the shorter version of my name on it, but I left it at home. So all in all, unfortunately you will have to fork over another $250... Sucks!!!!!

Oh wow, ojn. That really sucks. I'm sorry about it. I guess the easiest way to do this is to take the passport with you and use whichever version of the name that's on there, on your registration as well.

If your name doesn't match passport then affidavit should help. No first name or no last name cases are typical and if you are in that category then you will have to be extra careful in filling all forms.

hello guys, i have scheduled an online gmat exam, my name and surname are in lower case letters both in my mba account and in my configuration letter for the exam, but in my ID are in upper case letters (exactly the same). Does anybody know if that is considered a mismatch and what should i do in that case, because i have sent a ton of emails in the customer service and nobody has answered.
