I gave my GMAT today and scored 650((q42 v 37),I know that’s not an impressive score but I tried my level best and that’s all I could get,anyways I just wanted to share my GMAT experience with everyone.
I took my GMAT for the first time in august and scored only 570 ,at that time the major culprit was timing and also I hadn’t expected to encounter such tough questions specially permutations and combinations.I went to the exam,expecting another replica of the practice testin powerprep software but now I feel it badly needs to be updated.
The second time I really worked towards timing strategies.(the article in the resources section of this website is excellent),I managed to complete both the sections on time .Unfortunately in the verbal section I got some really long RCs which were already my weaknesses ,I could have easily touched 700 if not for them but I guess that’s life.I strongly felt if I had taken the GMAT with this kind of prep the first time round I could have easily touched 700 .GMAT is definitely getting tougher .(so better hurry guys)
The first time I had some really simple questions in the first ten questions on both sections but the second time I was dazed by the second question itself but I decided not to get nervous coz I had already made up my mind that was the last time I am goin to write GMAT.Not that I gave up,its just that I believe there are many other ways you can prove yourself,I didn’t want to waste time,moreover I have no ambition to go to Harvard or any other big schools coz I cannot afford their tuition.
If you are planning to write GMAT in the near future be prepared to accept some really hard questions and do not rely too much on Official guide and even powerprep,ETS has really changed the kind of questions and also the difficulty levels. Although verbal section questions were very similar to OG,the answer choices were very confusing.
Moreover,your performance depends a lot on your state of mind on that day,if you get nervous you are going to send all your hardwork(which u must have put in for months or years)down the drain. it is essential that you treat the test as a normal test(just like you did while practicing)
I don’t know how many people will agree with me but don’t attempt GMAT more than thrice ,try your level best and concentrate on other aspects of your application.You will be successful, after all your ultimate aim is to reach Bschool that suits you the best..
Note:This article is not applicable to those aiming for top schools,it is meant for lesser mortals like me

Congrats on your score and more importantly its gladdening to know that you are happy with 650 and not cribbing about missing the 700 mark. For the record even I have scored 650 and also cribbed about not getting to the coveted 700 mark.But one thing that goes against us is our demography and a score of 650 wud surely raise a red flag for the adcomm's no matter which school you apply to. But then as you said, there are other ways to prove our worth and even I'm banking on the same.About the GMAT test,without an element of doubt I can say that its getting tougher.The app season is in full swing ...' so lets get it started'..its time to rack our brains to write essays than go over idiom lists.
BTW, Businessweek came out with its 2004 rankings yesterday...have u guys checked it out.
