Just took the GMAT earlier today and thought I'd write a little debrief. Got a 680 today Q48 V35. Ecstatic about my quant but disappointed with my verbal. Been reading this forum a lot the past couple of months so thought I'd contribute a post.
Am really really happy with my Quant score. I finally let myself "give up" on some questions and feel that this was the biggest reason I was able to do so well in Quant. At least 3 different questions I knew that those types always take me way too long to solve (and usually I always got them wrong) so I just chose the answer that looked like the normal right answers and moved on. For the first time I had time to actually solve the last 5 questions whereas I would usually end up blindly guessing D or E on these because I would always be short on time. Today I had the time to solve them and I actually knew how to solve them.
My proctor was awful, he wasn't paying attention to the test takers and took over a minute each time to get to my station for my breaks. Between quant and verbal it took him over two and a half minutes to come to my station. So by the time I left the testing room I only had a little under 5 minutes of my break left. Has anybody ever had this happen to them? The first time I took the GMAT my proctor was at my station within 30 seconds of me raising my hand.
So by the time I started my verbal I was a little frazzled. Even while doing the verbal section I knew I wasn't doing as well as I did on my practice exams. I was second guessing myself and a lot of the time ended up debating/agonizing between 2 answer choices. Midway through the verbal I was seriously losing my attention span and I had to close my eyes for a minute to give myself a mental break. This really helped and I picked up steam a little bit. But by that time it was too little too late, the damage was already done.
Am I crazy to want to retake the exam? If I retake the exam I know I'm not as likely to get a Q48 again but I'm hoping to raise my verbal score. If I retake the exam and end up with a lower Quant score, will this harm my applications?
Side Note:
If you're based in NYC and looking for a prep place I highly recommend MBA House in Soho. They offer a package plan of classes and tutoring combined for a great price. Very flexible class hours too. They offer a verbal and a quant class every night Monday through Thursday so you can choose the ones that work best for your schedule. They also offer tutoring anytime from Monday through Saturday. The math tutor, Kevin, is amazing and is for sure the reason I got such a high quant score. Spent the past week working with him on combinatorics and I actually saw one today on the test and for the first time knew how to solve it. He was also the one that taught me how to "give up". The verbal tutors, Adam and David, are amazing as well and really helped me understand idioms and pretty much everything else grammar related.

*If you're an iPad owner I highly recommend the GMAT Toolkit app. It seriously helped me so much. I only regret not getting it earlier in my studies. I didn't get it till after my first official GMAT test in October. It made a world of difference in my last month plus of studying.
