My first attempt today at the GMAT resulted in a 700(Q48,V38). I was hoping for a 740+ but it wasn't to be. I'm a native speaker but I took the test in Japan so I'm not sure if the question mix would be the same for those who are taking it in the states. The test was okay.
Quant. started out okay but got stumped on question 6 by a question that i've seen in OG several times, but I just developed a brain freeze and couldn't get an answer. I spend about 4-5 minutes on it and that just threw off my timing and I panicked. after question 15, i just sped thru the next 10-13 questions blindly to get back on schedule. then the questions got easier and i ended up finishing with 7 minutes left in Quant. I did horrible on time management so I probably made quite a few careless errors because the questions weren't particularly tough.
Verbal started out bad on question 1 (SC)which i wasn't sure and had to guess between 2 answers. things got better with several RC questions that dealt with subjects I am interested in. around question 25, i was running really low on time so any SC questions i encountered got about 30 seconds of attention. had 2 bold-face questions out of 3 around the last 5 questions. they actually weren't too tough or too abstract, but I had less than 5 minutes left so those got less than 45 seconds of attention. the last question I guessed without reading because i had 6 seconds left. The verbal questions weren't too bad. They were actually quite similiar to OG in almost all respect. All the RC passages were about 45-50 lines long with the last one being only about 25 lines long. Again time managment was my biggest problem.
For the Quant. section, things got easier towards the end and i ended up with 7 minutes left but for the Verbal part, it didn't get easier so I ended up running out of time.
study material:
-PP1: 690 or 700 (forgot which one) (Q49, V35)
-PP2:700(Q49, V36)
-did all of OG
-did all of Kaplan GMAT verbal workout
-did all of Kaplan GMAT
-did all of PR GMAT
-did all of PR GMAT verbal workout
-did all of ARCO thomson GMAT CAT (book was not good, the questions were irrelevant and not similiar to real test)
-did all of Barron's GMAT (same complain as ARCO)
The funny (actually sad) thing is that I took PP1 and PP2 one week into my study and had 690-700 on both tests and then i studied intensively for the next (8 hour day since i'm not working) 2.5 months and my scores did not improve any.
Should i retake the test again since i'm hoping to get a 740+. I honestly think that i can get it if I had better time management because the questions i received wasn't very abstract or absurdly difficult. I just get caught up on some tricky ones and that messes up my timing and i have to make quick decisions on other questions to make up for lost time.
i've included my profile on another post to seek advice as to whether I should retake the exam for a better chance to get into my choices of schools. Please advise!!!
