Where do i begin ?
These past 10 months have been a roller coaster ride. From 640 to 680 (in 3 months) and then amazingly from 680 to 730 in a month.
After reading blog after blog of success stories, it's my turn now to write my own. (I'm gonna try and keep it as short and to the point as possible).
Arsenal:Study Material:-
Manhattan Strategy Guides These were heaven-sent. These guides help you build a strong core. Do them well, especially the math and Sentence Correction guides. For someone with below average Math skills (and I'm really not being modest) this set of guides was my personal Jesus. I can't speak for those who've got Newtonian Math skills but for the rest of us, you guys shouldn't even consider taking the GMAT without going through these books.
The Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide is a bible. I read and re-read it till it became a part of me.
-
Powerscore CR bible: Definitely worth going through at least once.
-E-GMAT : Well, this course is i guess tailor made for non native speakers. But to those of us who have a fairly decent command over the language, e-gmat will seem elementary at best. I did not buy the Verbal Live course but the online study course I noticed quite a few grammatical errors, which i think
E Gmat should really look into.
I referred to no other study material.
Practice Material:-For this i must thank GMAT Club. The kind of resources they make accessible is mad. A few that come to mind (Search the downloads section and you will find these);
-
Advanced Math 700-800 level : With over 300 sums, this guide is all you need to solidify those concepts that Manhattan has taught you. Go through all the questions, all the solutions (whoever took the time to compile this file, man...i salute you and you will sail through the Quant Section.
-
A hundred 700 + Sentence Correction : Another PDF file that i swear by.An excellent compilation of SC questions.
-
CR 700-800 : Yet another amazing compilation of CR questions with excellent explanations.
-
117 RC passages : Has all the RC passages under the sun. Did 3 a day all through my prep. The only downside of this file is that there are no explanations for the answers.
-
GMAT club question bank and tests: Superb math questions, which will definitely help boost your GMAT score from the low 40s to high 40s for sure.
In addition to the resources i found at GMAT club;
-
GMAT prep question pack - This is a must buy, there's no doubt about it. These are the kind of questions you will see on the real test. However, if you are doing well in the Quant section on the real test, be ready for some tougher questions.
-
OG : Need i say more ? Know the concepts involved in all the questions.
Tests:
By the time i had to take my third attempt i had exhausted all my tests and took just one test in the last month before my attempt, but these are the ones that i used;
-
Manhattan Tests : These are a god sent ! When i just started taking them, i don't ever remember getting over 600, so yeah they're tough. But they've got a massive question bank. Make sure you go through all the solutions well. These tests may be slightly tougher than the real deal but that's a good thing. You can reset these tests a few times and still see new questions, i think that that is simply amazing. You get your money's worth.
-
GMAT prep tests : The two tests that come free with the software and the exam pack. Since these are official questions, they are a must buy.
I must mention , though, that the exam pack was shabbily put together. If i'm paying 30$ i want the software to be bug free and not see a few questions repeat in the same test. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it.
-
GMAT club tests - The math questions on these tests, albeit a little tougher than the actual test, are excellent for building composure even in the eye of a storm.
The day of ..:One very important thing i learned through these past 10 months is composure. The GMAT or any other test for that matter, tests composure. And since you don't have time to calm yourself down or take a break in the middle of the test . Make sure you are calm before going into the test center. Don't think about anything. Just think of the test as having nothing to lose. You don't get a question, don't be phased. If within a minute you feel you will not be able to solve it. Guess and move on.
I cannot stress time management enough ! Make sure that even when you are prepping, you prep under timed conditions. You have to develop that internal clock that tells you that you that your 2 mins are up.
Other things that helped me:-Friends : As corny as this is, my friends really helped me. They believed i could do it even when i doubted myself. You need that kind of encouragement when you are prepping for 10 months. The prep drained me mentally and emotionally, but my friends helped me through and through.
-Running : Exercise is a must. Even if you have to run at night, Run !! It releases endorphins, keeps you fresh and ,i believe, made me smarter.
-Reading : Read !
This blog has gone on longer that i intended it to.
So, all the best and trust me when i tell you that the GMAT is not insurmountable. With a little bit of hard work and focus you can nail it !
