Hello,

So I just took the GMAT and got a 730.

Q50 (89 percentile)
V38 (84 Percentile)
IR-3 (23 percentile) !!!
AWA - awaiting
Overall-730 (96 percentile)

GPA: 5.0 out of 5.0, Engineering, from top 15 Russian university
2 years experience, Entrepreneur (tech startups)
3 years experience, from engineer to project manager in IT

PMI PMP cert

I will be applying for HBS, Stanford, MIT, INSEAD

Should I retake to try for a higher IR and overall score?

I'm happy to respond. :-)

First of all, here's a blog to consider:

My gut sense about your question is: NO, don't retake. First of all, a 730 is a very impressive score, and it would be hard to repeat this on a retake --- don't take for granted that you would be able to repeat that performance. It's not clear whether adcom even looks at the IR score, and it most certainly is not clear whether IR plays any significant role in the admission decision. Most of the evidence so far seems to indicate that adcom doesn't attribute a great deal of weight to the IR.

Think about this from adcom's perspective. Adcom looks at Igor's application & GMAT. Everything is great, but IR is low. Does this mean that Igor can't read graphs and interpret data? Well, Igor is a very intelligent and successful engineer, and typically an engineer doesn't have much trouble processing data. ---- In other words, even if adcom were going to suspect some kind of weakness because of a low IR score, you are an unlikely candidate for such suspicions, simply because of your background.

I would just recommend: make sure other aspects of your application (your recommendations, your personal statement, etc. ) make sure it's clear that you are very strong in all the relevant IR skills.
