Just took the GMAT a couple weeks ago and I want to share my experience to see if there is any advice from anybody that I didn't think of. I also want to post this because I think my story is kind of unique.
On my second try I scored a 610 (48q, 27v). On my first try I scored a 650 (42q, 38v). A bit frustrating because a 48q and 38v is about a 710, BUT as strange as it seems, the second score is very motivating because I was always concerned with the quant side because I always heard that was the hardest. A 48 makes me believe I can get a 50 or above on the next time around with a little bit of elbow grease.
Prep work and Journey:
1. Took a
Manhattan Prep Class. Read through the books, but didn't keep up with the OG problems or do the practice tests (HUGE mistake-totally should have done this earlier).
2. Started a new job. It was/is pretty demanding so I took about 3 months off. Signed up for the GMAT anyways.
3. 5 weeks from the exam date, I panicked and started cramming. Started taking tests every week (4 in total leading up to the exam). Did the Powerscore RC (for LSAT) and CR Bibles. For the most part, my studying consisted of taking practice exams every week from
MGMAT and then reviewing them in detail during the week (probably not the best strategy).
4. Went in relaxed and took the exam - 650. Not bad I thought, especially for the time and effort compared to some of the stories on here. It did make me realize the seriousness of the exam.
5. Sought out a tutor for the 2nd time around. Tutor made me realize my math skills aren't bad, but my timing was really bad. Just the timing alone made my score jump 4 points in a week in quant!!! (Would've been nice to know this the first time around).
6. Worked on Math and almost ignored verbal for the most part.
7. Took the exam second time about 6 weeks after the first (about 1 week break included). Did well on quant (I think I can do better because I was in a rush towards the end), verbal timing was COMPLETELY off (I mean a disaster...I knew at question 20 I was going to bomb the section).
Going Forward:
1. Improve my quant - My timing is still off and I still have some pretty weak areas so I am working on those individually for 2 to 3 weeks. I haven't really gone through all of OG so I am working on OG and the Quant Review 2 book. I am also using this forum for the Math as there are some excellent resources I found while browsing yesterday.
2. Improve my verbal (obviously). I think my actual verbal level is around a 34 to 36 range currently. I consistently score a 34 to 36 in practice exams. I haven't touched OG problems for the most part so I am planning on hitting all of the OG problems before my next test. I believe this area is extremely easy to improve. When I scored a 38, I can't say I really worked hard on verbal either.
3. Continue working with the tutor. The tutor holds me accountable for studying so he is very helpful in that respect.
4. Retake in about 6 weeks.
On a side note, I want to point out that OG is very good. Whoever said you can't score high just by doing OG problems isn't correct.
The reason behind my 42 to 48 jump is because I actually started working out of OG rather than just going through old practice tests from
MGMAT. The more difficult questions may test multiple concepts but the OG questions are very relevant.
Any words of advice?
