I completed my GMAT today and my score was 650(Q 42, V 38). Pretty close to what I expected.
Background: I joined GMAT club 6-7 months ago. I participated for a bit and dropped out of the radar. I also joined GMAX online in Jan, but only watched about 20% of their videos and never completed their homework. My approach totally lacked discipline, but more important things in life (summer,Golf, travelling) took their toll on my preparation. Anyway to make a long story short, I started my preparation on Jul 21.
My test was scheduled for Jul 27 !!!!, I tried to change it on the night of Jul 20 (to beat the 7 day window), but mba.com was giving me some weird error, so called in the next day and they gave me a voucher and changed the test to saturday, Jul 30. I also took 4 days off starting Jul 26.
My preparation: Started with OG, ran through CR by saturday. Completed Sentence correction by Monday. Half assed the quant and DS sections. (Pretty much looking through the problems and solving the ones that look tough). I never practised the AWA stuff.
Preparation tests:
Tuesday : Poweprep - 640(I remembered more than half the questions from OG)
Wednesday: Kaplan - Higher Score : 530
Thursday Morning: GMAX Test 1 : 560
Thursday Night : Kaplan - Higher Score : 540
Friday : GMAX Test 2 - 570.
As you can see, I never crossed 600 on any test apart from PowerPrep. PP is the anamoly because I remembered the answers from OG. I did one gmat challenge a while ago at work. I dont remember what I scored.(Even though I took only 1 test, I really felt that the questions were GMAT level).
The Exam:
AWA was easy and was about couple of antacid drugs. Something like one is more effective because 75 million more of them were prescribed.
Quant was a little harder than OG, which is because the test is adaptive. My first question was simple. Next question was something like what is the least(or greatest? I forget) n such that 10 power n is a factor the first 24 positive integers. I guessed this one. The next one was really easy. This pattern continued for the next 10-12 questions and then things started to settle. I did not have time to complete the last question which was a compound interest formula(which I did not know) applied to a depreciating asset.(I guessed on this one too).
Verbal was pretty similar to OG. Everytime I read a SC question in OG, I exactly understood what was wrong/right whereas Kaplan is so freakin ambigious.
If I had one more week, I really think I could have pushed my score to 700+.
The 2Week-GAMEPLAN: (For People who have only 2 weeks to study)
Knowing what I know now, here is what I would do. Read this if you have only 2 weeks to study and want to score 700-750. Dont read this if you want to score 750+.
Take 2 weeks off. Period. Take 2 weeks off. Tell your boss, you came down with ebola or whatever and take 2 weeks off.
1. Take the PowerPrep tests.(Both of them). one on each day
2. Spend the third day analyzing the results and your weak areas(Make an excel sheet/old piece of paper something, BUT make sure you spend this day or two analyzing).
3. Start with the OG and complete all sections.
4. Do one GMATClub challenge a day for 6 days. (Iam not kidding here, If I could change one thing, It would be this).
5. Take 4 tests from Kaplan/Princeton.(This will give you a good time reference). AWA tests can be taken based on individual preferences.
6. Spend the morning taking the test and the evening studying the results and re-read those sections from the OG.
7. Take the test.
Disclaimer: Iam fairly confident this will work for a lot of people but there can always be exceptions. If you have a better plan, use it.
Thanks to everyone in GMAT club. For the last week, I have been reading the GMAT experience section during my breaks. I borrowed someone's idea(Thanks!) of drinking red bulls between the breaks. I really think, it helped.
Now back to that darn golf swing...
