Hi Everyone
I gave my GMAT today and got a
690 (Q49 V35)
. I am deeply let down by myself and thought to turn to GMATClub for some advice as i always have.
Following is a debrief about my preparation.
A brief about myself:2008- 2012- B.E Graduate from Delhi College of Engineering in Electronics and Communication.
2012 to present- Logistics Consultant with one of the Big Fours since 2012 (2.5 years work ex).
Target B-Schools: INSEAD, Kellogs (super duper ambitious, i know, but i really want to do Consulting in and out. I was born for it. These schools are a dream for me.)
Period of Study: 4 weeks
Books Used: Official Guide, Manhattan SC, Manhattan Advanced Quant
Practice Tests Used: GMATPrep (2 tests),
Manhattan GMAT Practice Tests ( 6 tests) , Veritas Practice Tests
Basically I am a daily 9 a.m to 9 p.m working professional. So before starting with the actual preparation i first finished the OG over 3 months, working slowly and steadily over each an every question during weekends spending not more than 2-3 hours on any day (that is around 4-5 hours a week). I had planned a 4 week leave in September for the real preparation. So four weeks back i was finished with my OG. I had all the basic understanding and concepts clear. To start with, i bought an online practice test series from Jamboree. Got 12 tests for 5000 Rs. Although they were excellent and really helped me, they were not CATs ( but they were timed). I gave a test daily, and in around two weeks i was done with them. I made sure to analyse myself after each mock test. I found that i was really good with Verbal part. I always got around 30 to 35 questions correct out of the 41. Maths was OK. I was comfortable doing it owing to my science background, however timing was a serious issue. I always missed out on the last 4-5 questions.
Anyways after this phase, i thought i was ready to give some real CATs now. My friends suggested my the
Manhattan GMAT tests. I bought the Manhattan SC book. Took 3 days to finish it, and started with the CATS. Here are my scores:
MGMAT CAT 1: 540 (Q32 V33) {was really taken aback after this one, was perished. I missed out around 15 questions in Quant. Did badly in Verbal. I analyzed my mistakes, and decided to retake)
MGMAT CAT 2: 690 ( Q44 V39)
MGMAT CAT 3: 640 (Q43 V35)
MGMAT CAT 4: 690 (Q45 V38)
MGMAT CAT 5: 660 (Q42 V38)
I did not give the 6th test. I was totally frustrated and was not even able to cross the 700 mark

.
I was always under an impression that
MGMAT tests are tougher than the actual GMAT test (i still hold that to be true). My friends also suggested the same. So to get a different perspective i bought 7 practice tests from Veritas. Following are my test scores:
September 18: 740 Q49 V43
September 19: 690 Q48 V37
September 21: 740 Q49 V43
September 24: 740 Q50 V41
September 25: 720 Q49 V40
September 26: 680 Q45 V38 ( Gave this on the previous day of the exam)
In parallel to these tests i was also finishing up with my Manhattan Advanced Quant book. I finished the chapters in 3 days and then started doing 2 work sets daily (it has a total of 15 work sets). I made sure after each tests that i spent 2 hours analyzing my responses, and make sure i do not make the same mistakes again.
After doing the first three Veritas tests i gained confidence and decided to give the official GMATPrep tests from mba.com.
GMATPrep Test 1: September 20, 720 Q50 V37
GMATPrep Test 2: September 24, 730 Q49 V40
These gave me a lot of boost.
Before the test day I was not very confident. I knew i am going to be stuck somewhere on the border (the 700 borderline). But prayed that it be the the other side of the border ( it did not happen though

).
Actual GMAT: 690 Q49 V35 IR8 (not received my AWA scores yet, it went well though)
I did not really care about the Quant score. I knew it will be something between 49 and 51. But i was shocked at my Verbal. I never received such a low verbal score in my mocks.
Anyways, looking at the result i think, i further need to work on Verbal. Quant i hope i'll be able to maintain consistency with a decent amount of practice.
I know i can do much better.
But right now i really need a bit of advice from you guys for the strategy further ( time that i should give, focus areas, etc.). Please help. There is no way i am getting a leave from my office now ( i utilized all that were remaining), but maybe a week at the end before the retake exam would be possible. I think i have utilized all the major resources available for practice. My ultimate aim is to get a 730+ score. Right now i feel really destroyed. Please suggest me a strategy further.
Thanks in advance.
Warm Regards
