Hey all,
First, a huge thank you to everyone here on GMAT Club - this has been a truly invaluable resource for me over the past few months. Given that I have gained so much from the forum, I felt that the least I could do was give a write up of my personal experience with the GMAT.
I took the exam yesterday and exceeded my expectations, ultimately scoring a 720 (Q48 V40 IR7). My studying strategy was as follows:
Materials:
-
Manhattan GMAT Guides (Ended up not really using either of the foundations books and the advanced quant)
- Official GMAC Guide books
- GMAT Prep Software
- GMAT Club free practice exam
I began studying in mid-January and kept going right up until the day of my exam. Overall I would estimate that I studied roughly 50 hours or about 8 hours per week. Initially, I took a the Official Guide diagnostic exam, scoring very well on CR, PS, and RC. However, my scores on DS and SC left much to be desired, so I focused my efforts in the first 10 days or so on running through practice problems. This was pretty ineffective as I hadn't completed any of the
MGMAT guides yet, so I wasn't very familiar with the types of concepts being tested and how to identify common problem structures. Shortly after this I took my first full length CAT on the GMATPrep software scoring a 640 (Q41 V38 IR8). Needless to say I was very disappointed. I thought that all hope was lost and I would never reach my target score of 700+.
This is when I changed up my strategy and began focusing on completing one
MGMAT guide book at a time and then working through each corresponding OG practice problem both in PS and DS. Slowly but surely, I began to make huge strides and got to the point where I was routinely answering about 90% of all PS and 80% of all DS questions correct. About two weeks ago I took the GMAT club free practice exam for Quant and Verbal scoring a Q44 V41 which I was happy with. I continued practicing problems and reviewing all of the questions that I got incorrect by looking at GMAT Club's solution guide and viewing
Magoosh GMAT's explanations on YouTube. Last week, I took my final free GMATPrep CAT and scored a 700 (Q46 V40). The day before my exam, I took the GMATPrep Quant and Verbal CAT again and scored a 700 (Q45 v40) with very few questions repeated. At this point I was feeling pretty good about the exam, although I was worried that I may slip up on test day and not hit my target score of 700+.
On the morning of my exam, I got up early, went for a run, and then worked through a few practice problems before heading to the testing center. The AWA and IR sections went pretty much as expected, and I wasn't very concerned with either of them despite my lack of preparation. (Though, I should note that I did quickly review the AWA template posted by chineseburned the night before my exam.) Next up.. the dreaded quant section. The first few problems were relatively easy, but I was a bit concerned when I didn't sense the difficulty of the problems increasing as I went through more and more of the exam. By the time I was at question 25 or so I was completely in the zone and felt more confident than I ever had in any of my practice exams. I finished the quant section with about 2 minutes to spare which also came as a surprise as I often was forced to guess on the last 2-3 problems in my practice CATs. The verbal section felt a bit more difficult than I had anticipated, but I made my way through it quickly, finishing up with 10 minutes to spare. My hands were shaking as I clicked through the background info screens and waited for my unofficial score to pop up.... 720!!! I couldn't believe it. My quant score of Q48 came as a huge surprise to me. I couldn't be happier to be finished with the GMAT though.
Thanks again to everyone on GMAT Club for making this such a great resource for all GMAT test takers!
