I'm pretty new here so I apologize in advance if this is the sort of "duh" question that has been asked a zillion times before.
I've taken a few of the practice tests so far (Kaplan online, PP1 and Kaplan CD, scored 720, 690 and 730 respectively) and in all cases, on a strict percentage-answered-correctly basis, as well as on scaled score, I do slightly better on quant than on verbal. But on a percentile basis, it's been fairly even, or verbal slightly ahead.
For example, the most recent Kaplan practice score (730) was broken down as 46 quant (96%) and 43 verbal (96%), with overall 99%.
From this, I conclude that more people score very highly on the quant section than on the verbal section, making the higher percentiles tougher to achieve on the quant portion. Is that right?
And since I've heard that many b-schools care more about the quant section than the verbal, should I concentrate more on raising my quant scores? Or should I spend more time on verbal, on the assumption that I can better distinguish myself from other candidates this way? Of course I'll review both, but I have about 3 1/2 weeks left to study, so I want to budget my time wisely.
For example, will most b-schools favour a 49 quant/40 verbal score over a 46 quant/43 verbal score? Or do they prefer candidates that score more evenly on both portions?

First of all...those scores from Kaplan are really good!! you seem to be well on your way to a great score!
anyway to answer your questions i'm not too sure what B-schools look for in particular but my guess would be that though they want a good quant score they would prefer a balanced score.
as for what you should concentrate on...just concentrate on the parts that you find challenging...because from ur score both quant and verbal seem to be going well for you...
not sure about whether what i said is helpful...but basically what i'm trying to say is don't stress too much...you're doing great!

Oh, I'm not really worried; I don't tend to get too stressed about exams. But I am taking the GMATs seriously, because I believe I have the potential to score highly and it would seem silly not to make every effort. I've identified my key areas of weakness and my study plan concentrates mostly on them: probability, combinations, and work/rate problems in quantitative, and sentence correction in verbal, plus an overall tendency to not read carefully enough or to make stupid mistakes.
Really, I was just asking this question for additional information about the test; it seems that a lower scaled score corresponds to a higher percentile in verbal, so logically it follows that it's harder to get a very high percentile in quant because more people do well. I was wondering what the implications of this were from an application point of view, is all.
