Hi all,
This is my first post. I just took the GMAT for the first time, and got a 680.
I'm one of the so-called poets, so I am happy with my quant score, which was a 47. Yes, a 48 or higher would have been better, but I am happy with a 47.
I am NOT happy, however, with my verbal score, which was a 37. I'd taken a few CATs before this exam, and my verbal scores had ranged from 38-44. I think 40 was the median.
I really wanted a 40+. I definitely felt fatigued by the time I started the verbal section, so I think stamina was part of the problem. I did not anticipate how tired I would feel. All of my CATs had been quant/verbal only, so I probably should have taken some full-length tests.

I did finish the section, but I'm pretty sure I screwed up some of the questions in the beginning. Initially, I barely felt like I could read what was on the screen.
I don't have my official report yet, so I can't say for sure what went wrong. I think I need to take this section seriously, though, and really develop a methodology for tackling the different question types.
Should I re-take? Do top schools mainly look at one's highest exam score? Is it typical to take the GMAT more than once?
I live in NYC, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not to apply to full-time or part-time B-school programs. If I went to a part-time B-school program...it would have to be Stern. The median GMAT for part-timers is 670, so my current score wouldn't hurt me. If I applied to Stern and Columbia full-time, however, I think I would need to take it again and get my score over 700. This could be achieved with a 40+V. I also have not taken a live prep course. Perhaps some tutoring would help?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
