I remember getting my results from my first mock written. 570. I just stared at the screen. How will I ever get to 700? I am not good enough. I am not clever enough. I almost gave up that day. But I didn't.
The purpose of this debrief is to help other non-natives. I always believed I was not a true non-native. After all, I speak English on a daily basis, I watch a lot of (actually only) English television programs. I am sorted. But believe me, there is a world of difference between GMAT English and "Batman: The Dark Knight" English.
Prep 1For my first attempt I used Manhattan's Interact course. In my opinion, the course is not that great. The math books are excellent but I did not fancy the interact videos, seemed like a waste of time actually. Although a lot of people prefer Manhattan's SC book, their verbal course did not work for me, and I believe the main reason is that I am a non-native.
Please understand me correctly, Manhattan is not bad, their interactive program and verbal books just didn't work for me. But he math books were excellent and I would recommend them any given day. However, the best components of Manhattan were the advanced quant book (this book is totally underrated) and Ron. Although Ron's responses might be perceived as rude, they actually are the best responses ever. He helped me understand that I am writing GMAT, not studying the theory of math. Excellent.
I wrote the GMAT and scored 680. I knew that I could have done more on the verbal section but didn't feel motivated by the material I used to study the verbal section.
Prep 2So I decided to retake and worked really hard at my studies. How did I improve from 680 to 760? Well, the quant base was solid thanks to Manhattan's books so I just used the
GMATClub tests to break the 49 barrier. And Bunuel, you are a genius. Done.
But the big break came when I purchased the e-gmat program. To be honest, I didn't believe the reviews or this program. But the program was cheap compared to the rest. This is the best verbal program ever. I moved from V34 to V42 (96%). The program really helped me understand the wrong answers and verbal became easy, really easy.
Here I must mention SJ from e-gmat. She is awesome and has the most patience ever. Thank you SJ.
SummaryFor non-natives: Buy e-gmat.
Manhattan math books are brilliant.
Bunuel is a genius.
Ron will learn you how to think when you have no idea what you are doing.
SJ will keep on explaining until you understand.
I practiced using official sources,
GMATClub tests and
Magoosh (very good question an explanations).
That is what worked for me, just thought that I would share my story as it might help somebody.
Good luck to all of you.
