Alright chaps, so I did my GMAT today and got 700. Having garnered useful information from this site and its participants I decided to give something back, albeit small, by writing about my experience.
I’ve been working in finance for 7 years now, and studying for this GMAT in the few spare hours I had was a real pain. Towards the end of my 2 month prep I was getting rather depressed with how tedious it was all becoming so I arrived at the centre with few nerves and really rather looking forward to getting it over and done with.
AWA: this was pretty straight forward, I had only practised 2 or 3 essays before the test and unbelievably it was a question that I had seen before and had worked already worked over mentally. I thought this must be my lucky day ! I lost about 5 minutes of concentration time as the lady next door was moaning about my typing and requested to move. Would have liked to add more to my answer but frankly my typing is appalling and 20 pc of the time is spent fixing typos.
IR. Got a 7 in this. Again something I didn’t look at before the test. Didn’t manage to finish this and had to guess the last 2 questions. Found some of the other questions rather odd to be honest.
Quant: This was always my weaker point. I was hoping to get a 47 or 48 , in the event had a bit of a nightmare with timing. It was going well , questions seemed to be getting suitably difficult and a third of the through I was thinking that it may well turn out to be the best quant effort I had ever put in. Somehow I started losing time, I spent prob 6 minutes on a question which I ended up guessing and then the whole thing became a bit of a blur with it becoming a real race against the clock. I basically guessed the last 10 or so questions doing no working out and still managed to miss 1 question at the end. So that one was a bit of a schoolboy performance.
Verbal: Went in to this pretty relaxed and on the whole I found this harder than the prep tests. Scored a 42 here- had been scoring 45 and 46 in the preps. First question seemed a nightmare CR spent 6 or so minutes on this and then ended up guessing.
I cant give advice re verbal as the prep for this was just practise questions. For quant what let me down was the speed. If you are in a similar position to me and find that given enough time with a quant question you can solve any one that they throw at you then the focus needs to be speed , and for me this is down to method. If there is a way to cultivate an understanding of EXACTLY what you need to do before you start writing anything down then I think half the battle is won. Because of my
lack of ability in the area I found I was basically messing around with numbers to try at somehow arrive at the right answer. This is too time consuming IMO for the gmat if you want to score high.
I didn’t find the length of the test a problem, take it easy in the first two sections and start the exam proper with quant, this was my method at least.
When I saw the 700 I was indifferent. I was hoping for more 720 or 730 which probably was within reach but the overriding feeling is one of relief knowing that I have my life back.
Good luck to those taking the test. Keep cool, clear and calm and thanks to al those contributors who helped me through the journey
