I have been studying consistently for a couple of months and have been doing timed sets for Verbal and Quant. My usual accuracy has been around 75 - 80 % in verbal. Even in the 1000 series question sets (fair mix of easy + tough), my accuracy has been fairly consistent. I took a GMAT Paper Test, and the accuracy was about 70 % for verbal and 95% for quant(though paper test quant is quite easy). Recently I took a Veritas Prep test and scored 570. I was surprised as I found the questions to be too tough.
Quant
The quant questions were mostly above 700 level. I took the GMAT last year and score a 48 on Quant. On the Veritas test I scored a 41. I am surprised as I have been consistently doing well on the quant.
Verbal
The Verbal part was even more surprising. I scored 28 on Veritas Test. I have been doing practice sets with an accuracy of 80%. I found the questions in all three areas including CR, RC & SC to be too tough than usual for a GMAT test. When I checked about the questions on the GMATCLUB community, most of them were indeed 700+ level questions.
Has anyone faced the same issue? Can some expert or other test takers comment on the issue at hand. I am surprised as I have done a fair amount of practice with good accuracy levels. Are the Veritas Prep Tests too tough? Has the team calibrated the tests to the tunes of Kaplan and the results are way too deflated? The level of difficulty is more important than the level of accuracy. on the GMAT, you can score 570 with 80 % accuracy and you can score 720 with 75 % accuracy. It all depends on your level of competence. Do not worry about the scores and percentiles from non-GMAC sources.Do not waste your time on over-analyzing your scores. It is simply not worth it. I scored 720 on GMAT Exam 1, 760 on GMAT Exam 2 and a 630 on Veritas CAT 1. GMAC paper test are at 650 level .
The first CATs are usually tough and I guess most of us begin with low scores ( you can make out the reasons for yourself as I am not so sure about why).I am not sure about Kaplan tests.
Veritas CAT Quant is more realistic than
MGMAT CAT Quant.Veritas Verbal questions especially the SC is of slightly different " genre" than the actual GMAT SC.It is not their fault because it is indeed difficult to produce sentences same as the official ones. CR on the Veritas is almost same as that of the
MGMAT. However, CR especially that requires quant. analysis is always tough and Veritas seems to have plenty of such type.
To be fair, Veritas CATs are good CATs and the scores just highlight the fact that there is room for improvement.Use CATs to know your weak areas , pacing and strategy. No matter what the test prep companies market, the CATs do not reflect actual scores and most have a 50 point deviation. CATs are good for building stamina and practicing pacing.
Lastly, getting questions right in test like conditions is different from getting questions right in stress- free conditions.
