My GMAT journey began with Princeton. I knew I would need some structure and guidance and I had heard a lot about the great teaching and learning environment at Princeton. From the beginning, it seemed that the importance of taking mock tests could not be stressed enough. Each test was a gruelling experience as the 4 hours it took always left me absolutely exhausted. It was especially difficult to manage with work but perseverance pays. Before taking my final exam I took 18 mock tests. I slowly understood the reason behind taking so many tests – it helped me build my stamina, it helped me pace myself (which was especially important as half the exam is about how you time yourself) and it helped me get so used to the exam that the final seemed like just another routine test.
It was a difficult few months of prep. My score was ‘stuck’ for quite a while and it was easy to feel disheartened but that’s not something you’re allowed to feel with Bandy sir and Priyanka mam around! Because of their constant support (i.e. continuous pushing) and unfaltering faith, I was able to see my lower scores in a new light. Test review became another way to learn and to not repeat the same mistakes. Priyanka mam and Bandy sir were always ready to clear my doubts and review my tests and this was invaluable.
The actual test didn’t go as well as I had planned. It so happened that in the AWA section I finished my essay but ran out of time and was unable to click on the submit button. And suddenly a page appeared that said I have timed out. I was in a state of shock after that as this had never happened in any of my mocks and I believed then that I would get a big ZERO for my essay and that this whole exam would be a waste. By the Quant section I had calmed myself down enough to see the test as another practice test because I thought I might have to give it again. In a way, what I thought was bad luck actually helped as I was completely stress-free for the rest of the exam. I couldn’t really celebrate my score until both Priyanka mam and Bandy sir confirmed that the essay would be marked and everything worked out as I ended up getting 6/6 in my essay!
I had not thought I could reach 750. I had not crossed 730 in all my mocks and only scored in the 700s in 6 out of the 18 tests. My diagnostic score was 590 and I had dropped to 570 once too. This exam taught me so much more than Quant and Verbal and for that I am truly grateful. I couldn’t have done it if wasn’t for Bandy sir and Priyanka mam and I cannot thank them enough.
