First attempt 610 q47v27??Don't wanna give up Q47v27. Help!!!

Question

Hi all

I attempted my exam yesterday. I got 610 q47v27. My least score in prep exams was 650. Im planning to take gmat again in a month or two. I wanna get into a good school. Please tell me what to do. When am I supposed to take gmat in order to apply this year.

Hey,

A dip in score can be because of various reasons and tiredness is one of those.
You scores shows that your verbal needs overhauling and your quants needs brushing by practicing. This can be done by devoting sufficient time.
Can you answer the following questions:

1. Did you take full CATs
2. Did you take the GMAT Prep CATs
3. When you say good schools, do you have any schools in mind?This can be helpful in knowing the average score of the schools you are targetting

You have 3 Rounds in each application cycle. Most of the Round 1 deadlines are in Sept and October and the Round2 deadlines are in early Jan.
So you can take the GMAT accordingly.

Thanks for the reply
1. Did you take full CATs -
Yes ( But honestly, I did not practice Verbal enough. I wrote a quant test every other day for a week before actual exam but skipped verbal so many times . I find RCs the hardest).
2. Did you take the GMAT Prep CATs- 
Yes (math and verbal sets completely). Scores (680,720)
3. When you say good schools, do you have any schools in mind?This can be helpful in knowing the average score of the schools you are targetting. 
I don't have anything in mind yet. Based on ranking I want to got to the best one I can get into. I have a masters degree in CS. I am looking for something to enhance my career. I am interested in schools with entrepreneurial courses. I want to work for a VC firm after my MBA.

Nationality: Indian 
Highest Degree : Masters in Computer Science from University of Houston (GPA 3.4)
Major: Computer Science
Work Experience: 4 years with Companies Xerox,Office Depot, Top Financial Bank in Manhattan NY
Role: ERP Business Process Techno Functional Consultant ( Financials ,Manufacturing,HRMS)
Extra Activities: Board member of tutorial services and Other family owned business for corporate event planning services catering top clients in all industries

Hi lobster10,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. Your practice CAT scores clearly show that you're capable of scoring at a much higher level. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day.

If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)? 
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once?

4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)? I was a little tensed when I came to verbal section. I thought i screwed up Quants, so I did not have that energy when working Verbal.
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Yes. Several times.

Hi Lobster10,

The extra information that you've provided is quite useful, as it helps to define what went wrong on Test Day. In real basic terms, you took your CATs in such a way that you were NOT properly training to face the Official GMAT on Test Day.

Test Day is a rather specific 'event' - the details are specific and they matter, so you have to train as best as you can for all of them. The more realistic you can make your CATs, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. The more you deviate, the more "inflated" your scores can become - and that's what happened here. By skipping sections, taking the CATs at home, taking them at different times, retaking CATs, etc., you weren't properly training for the FULL GMAT 'experience.'

Thankfully, this is a relatively easy set of problems to fix. The big question now is "how long will it take you to properly get 'used to' taking the full GMAT?" You'll certainly need a new set of practice CATs to work with and you have to put in the necessary time to train your brain (and body) for the FULL GMAT. You might also need to invest in some new GMAT training materials.

You should contact your School (University of Houston) if you had good relations with them and see what their requirements are for an MBA (i am assuming that's what you want to do). If you already have a degree from there and Alumni you know who completed the MBA program it may be benefitial to reach out as its always good to get an insider perspective plus they already know you student profile so getting in might be a little easier.
