Hey everyone!
I gave the GMAT a few weeks back and scored 700 (Quant:48; Verbal:38; IR:6)
Although it's not a very good score, I am happy about it. This post is for all those who get nervous easily, think that they don't have sufficient time or those who have performed badly in a previous attempt.
I had around 30 days to prepare for the exam as I had ISB deadline and this was my second attempt at the GMAT (took it exactly 16 days after my first). My first attempt was a mere 620 and I was shocked when my score flashed on the screen. I had never scored that low in any of the test series and my GMAT prep score before my first attempt was 710. I knew that I had a time constraint for the preparation but didn't imagine it to be so low!
I didn't learn any new concepts in those 16 days. At first, after giving the test, I spent some 2-3 hours in depression and felt dumb. Then, I started introspecting....replayed what all I did during the exam some 3-4 times and tried to figure out what exactly went wrong.I knew that there has to be a catch. Finally, I got to know that Verbal had screwed me. I was so exhausted after the first few questions on verbal that I was merely flipping through the rest. I was so worried on running out of time that I guessed answers for many questions and marked some even without reading. I had scored a 40 on verbal in GMAT prep but got a 28 in the main exam.
But after understanding my mistake, I followed a strategy. First, I scheduled another exam after 16days because I knew that this score wasn't my reflection at all(I just couldn't accept it!). I practiced only the verbal questions from Veritas Prep and worked on increasing my patience with Verbal! This is very important for all the test takers...Verbal is very frustrating. I used to practice some 25 hard questions daily and in the mean time used to divert my mind. One important thing I have realized is don't keep thinking about the exam all the time.. "
take it as if u don't need it". The more u think, the more u get scared on the final day. During the preparation days, involve in some diverting activities like join a club, go out for movies, most importantly breathe! I'm not telling u to waste your precious time, just keep your mind relaxed. In my case, I had to go to office and didn't take any leaves. Another important tip:
Remain positive!! Its the most important of all. During my first attempt, I used to think what if my computer shuts down during the exam or some other disaster happens...all this negativity reflected in my score. Keep your thoughts positive. It doesn't matter how many books u read or how many questions u solve, the battle is half won if u believe in yourself, remain positive and
develop patience (especially with verbal :p).
And for those who have scored badly in a previous attempt but know that they had given their 100% and were scoring well in the practice tests, don't hesitate to re-take the exam. I was told by many people that you just can't go from 620 to 700 in 16 days but this didn't stop me. Only you can assess yourself the best! So
introspect on what went wrong and carve out your own plan. Don't depend on someone else to do it for u.
