My background: I started with a 590 Q38 V33 IR5. I really didn't know the question types or how to approach anything. I also had some false notions on how the exam would be scored based on difficulty (wasted time). When I saw how poor of a score this was, in terms of my goal score, I signed up for empowergmat. I went through their 3 month program in 1 month. I wanted to get a solid strategy and foundation to start with and then transition to solo official gmat content for the remaining time. I feel like the general strategies preached by empowergmat and the quant sections were very good and helped me to improve. While the empowergmat verbal sections may be beneficial to some, they were not beneficial to me in any way. After trying the methods and everything I wasn't really seeing an improvement, and I felt like I was using more time setting up everything so I decided to stop using them and go back to what felt comfortable for me.
I went through OG, Quant OG, Verbal OG, Practice Questions Pack, all while taking CAT's every 1 to 2 weeks. I also had Manhattan CATs, while I felt these were decent practice for timing, I also thought the math section was more difficult. I also disagreed with some of their reasoning/logic behind their CR answers so I stopped using them and focused on only official content. Within the last two weeks I was finished with all of this material and moved onto Verbal GMAT paper tests (only the sentence correction part - I was starting to get burnt out from the boring RC and CR and IMO there's only so much you can do to improve there) and GMATClub Quant CATs. I felt these were pretty good, I got a 47 on every one that I took.
I struggled with sentence correction the most. When I first started off, even as a native English speaker for 24 years, I didn't have any idea about subject verb agreement, etc. I'd regularly miss around 60-70% of SC questions that I attempted. I read through
MGMAT SC, Veritas Prep SC, Veritas Prep youtube series on SC - still no improvement. I then decided to watch nearly every Thursday w/ Ron video focused on SC. My score began shooting up. I don't think that reading
MGMAT SC was a waste of time, as it was good to have a little baseline knowledge for when stuff was referenced during the videos. By the end I was down to missing maybe 1 to 2 SC questions per cat.
I started to really get burnt out during the last two weeks and really didn't want to study any more. The last few days, other than my final practice CAT, I only did like 10 Quant and 10 Verbal questions each day from my
error log. I didn't work my way all the way through my
error log.
CAT Score progress:
Test Day:Woke up at 5:40 AM, my test was scheduled for 8:00 AM. Didn't do any practice questions or flash cards as I have never believed in cramming at the last minute, I don't think it's beneficial. Arrived at testing center and there were a ton of people there for some insurance exam. Cruised through the essay section (not sure of score but it can't be too bad). Started IR, got flustered real quick, had to guess on a few questions that I know I should've gotten correct.
Was still a little flustered when I started quant. I eventually settled into a rhythm but at that point it may have been a little too lake to achieve my peak score.
Then I was planning on taking my break as I had done during all of my previous practice exams and have a quick snack. Unfortunately the palm scanner wasn't working for the first two minutes so they couldn't check me out. Finally it worked and I found the bathroom and went, I passed on the snack to make sure I was able to get checked back in on time (worried about palm scanner) and not lose any time on the verbal.
Verbal went alright. On some questions I was already beginning to focus on the score I would see at the end rather than the question in front of me at times. Finally made it through and... 730 Q48 V42 IR6.
General Advice:One of the biggest issues I had while taking the tests or any practice CATs was trying to grade my performance after every 10 questions. I would start thinking well I just missed or guessed on 2 out of the last 5 questions --- I'm done. I'm only seeing questions that feel easy -- My score is going to be terrible. It really is impossible to judge your performance in the middle of the exam so try your best to not think about it. The only time I felt like I absolutely crushed it was on my 760 practice CAT, every other one felt like I had the potential to get a terrible score.
