Hello everyone !!
I have appeared for my GMAT exam yesterday and my score is 670 (Quant 50 and Verbal 30)
Although I was not able to touch the 700 mark, I would rate my GMAT exam a satisfactory experience.
Please find my debrief below:Before the day of exam:Method: Self study with no fixed schedule or timelines.
Practice materials
Quant (in the order of significance)
1. OG 15
2. Manhattan guides
3. Quant 700 - 800 practice set
Verbal
1. OG 15 guide
2. Manhattan SC - must for beginners & self study people.
3. Aristotle SC - simple to use and covers almost all the topics
4- Powerscore CR - must for self study people. Covers all the topics in a systematic way.
Coming to practice, I have downloaded a few sample test documents, available in GMAT Club download section. I always made sure that I practice at least 30 SC questions and 20 CR questions, 2-3 passages daily after I felt I was strong on theory.
My advice: Maintain an
error log while practicing CR & SC questions.
I have taken almost all sample practice tests (without IR & AWA) provided by few big coaching companies in the last two weeks. Below are the scores:
Manhattan sample test - 650
Knewton sample test - 680
Veritas sample test - 680
Economist sample test - 670
GMAT prep test 1 - 690
GMAT prep test 2 (with IR & AWA) - 660 (taken one day before the exam)
On the day of examQuant :
The starting few questions were decent (average difficulty level) and i started getting tough questions right from question number 7 (or 8).
The level of difficulty was maintained for few more qsns and suddenly i started getting some elementary questions (which are not even 500 level).
I started to panic after seeing some really easy questions. I was wondering whether I have done any mistakes tot he previous which forced computer to throw easy questions.
Although there were a few tricky Data sufficiency questions scattered in between the overall level of difficulty remained the same.
Due to the initial tough questions, I was a bit worried whether i would be able to complete the exam on time, but luckily i managed to complete the entire set with a minute of time remaining.
The last 3 questions were really a giveaway questions. They were straight-forward and can be solved easily by applying formula. At this time, I almost lost hope that I will be able to score at least 50 on quant.
Being from an engineering background, I was fairly confident about my Math skills but was little skeptical about problems involving Permuations & combinations, Probability and Mixtures. Strangely, I have not encountered more than one question in each of those topics.
My advice:
1. Do NOT panic on seeing easy questions. Questions which might look easy for you might be difficult for others
2. Pay extra attention to DS questions. Never ever fall for statement carry over trap.
3. Do not assume anything from figures.
4. While applying substitution method, make sure you pick sample numbers covering a wide set of options
5. Maintain strict intervals and always keep an eye on Remaining Time - Remaining Questions ratio
6. Always take the optional break
Verbal
Verbal is never my strong zone. I was only able to score in 27 - 33 range in almost all the practice tests. The Quant experience further dented my confidence.
Initial few questions were good. I felt i was on the right track until when I saw two huge back-to back passages. It was a bit strange because I have never got two big passages in line and those 2 big passages really drained me a lot. Luckily the topic of one passage is a field of my interest, so i was able to keep the momentum going.
SC: Although I have practiced a lot of Sentence correction questions, I still felt the exam questions to be new and not the generic pattern type.
CR: I always feel that the real difficulty in CR lies in selecting the right choice because of the closely knit answer choices. Exam is of no difference.
Questions are almost similar to OG.
RC: On a whole i have got 2 big passages and 2 small passages. Question types are almost similar to OG.
I kept checking my progress by maintaining strict time intervals because I do not want to get pressurized at the end.
My advice:1. Always read each and every option of the answer choices.
2. Give a quick glance of passages before even looking into the first question
3. Maintain strict intervals and always keep an eye on Remaining Time - Remaining Questions ratio
