Took the test Dec. 19 in the afternoon. Thank God that I was able to sleep the night before - I chose afternoon because I am not a morning person and wanted some buffer time in case I had a sleep problem the night before as I often do before big days. I tell you, this was THE most nerve-racking test I have ever taken, and I have also taken SAT and GRE. I guess the reasons are personal (perhaps more on that later).
Test day:
I really de-emphasized the AWA. I don't know how good a strategy that is in general, but in my job I have to do a lot of technical writing, so this part didn't bother me. I finished each essay with 10-15 minutes to spare so that I could rest for the other parts (that was my strategy going in).
In the quant, I did OK with the first couple of questions, then I started having a panic attack where I felt I could barely add 3 and 3! Perhaps this was why I didn't get 51 like I did for almost all my practice tests. I usually finished with 10 min or so to spare during practice sessions per my strategy of resting, and I think I had maybe 5 or so min. left during the real test. I was not allowed to extend my break with this extra time, so I just had to sit there.
Note: The breaks felt long during my practice tests at home, but they felt really short at the test center! Anyone feel this way?
By the time I got to verbal, I had spent so much nervous energy that I think I was in cruise control for some part of it. During the last 15 minutes or so, I was so drained that I just wanted the day to end. I am amazed that I scored the way I did. It was a bit better than the best from my practice tests.
Another note: the flicker on the computer screen at the test center was distracting - it really kind of amplified my nervous energy at certain times. I wasn't able to visit other testing centers to see if they were any different - 2006 brings some changes, so I don't know how the setups will differ (and I never will thank God!).
Well, gotta go now. Perhaps I'll post my prep and maybe some other tidbits of experience later. Good luck everyone.
