Here's some info on myself and how i studied for it. I think it will be useful for NORMAL people who aren't always the top student in the class and expect to get 700's.
I am a software engineer graduated 2 yrs ago, now working as a QA engineer. I used to work Over time all the time and busy with new software release, but 2 months ago, i was actually home early and didn't have much to do and i read McClean's MBA rating, so i just thought maybe i will do GMAT and see how it goes.
I bought the Kaplan 800 and did it, but i knew it wasn't enough. Personally, i like the class environment and i knw it will push me harder to study cuz you have to PAY $$$$. So i signed up for the Kaplan course and schedule the GMAT exam on Feb 2 while my last Kaplan course is on Feb 1.
My diagnostic test was 500, that's because i only knew how to do PS questions. So i did all my Kaplan material and then one day i landed on this site. I kept reading how OG is much better than Kaplan, so i bought the OG and did it on my own. And i do realize the difference between the OG and Kaplan question, so i kinda gave up on Kaplan after session 7. But don't get me wrong, Kaplan is definitely great for refreshing the foundation and stuff. Kaplan didn't even touch on standard deviation, but for GMATPrep, the first question is standard deviation, which could totally screw up your score if you get your first question wrong.
So i studied everyday after work, didn't see my gf for a month, cuz i have to study on the weekend. I didn't DRINK for 2 MONTHS...yup..i didn't even drink for Christmax and NEW YEAR..come on..u gotta give me credit for that....haha.. Cuz i wanna prepare myself to the exam mode.
Here's the breakdown for some of the Prep that i did.
Kaplan:
CAT1 580
CAT2 590
CAT3 670
Ultimate Practice test 580
GMAT Prep:
640
I took a week off to study for the exam, I was pretty stressed out the whole time and can only sleep 6 hrs a day and i think i lost 5lb or somthing. The nite before my exam, i watched fights (UFC) to relax myself. After that i was just soooo pumped that i wanna knock GMAT out..hahaha... I didn't agree with relaxing the day before exam, cuz I used to study till the last minute for university. But with GMAT..u really need to chill the day before, cuz GMAT ain't the ordinary University exam. The question that's on GMAT won't be the same as the past exam paper you get in university. You really need to have a clear state of mind to function well and think clearly what the question is asking.
Also try to pratice using ear plugs at home if you are planning to use ear plugs when u are doing your GMAT. For my Ultimate practice test, i used ear plugs and only realizing that i am used to reading the questions out loud. So try to make yourself family with the environment, how the monitor is on top of the desktop, so is higher than just placing the monitor on the desk...tiny stuff like that.
So if you are getting ready for the exam, practic the OG and GMATPrep, cuz the GMAT question is really similar with the OG, and their difficulty aren't too far off as well. If you have internet access at work, do the GMATCLUB"s verbal section's question, those definitely help too.
I don't remember how many SC, CR, RC questions i have and i have NO idea how some of you remember everything..haha I just remember i have 4 RC and everything else was pretty even.
So that's it for now, hope it helps.
Cheers,
Kelvin
