This post is an attempt to help aspirants to land their dream school. One goes through a lot of materials before appearing for GMAT. I, in this post, am reviewing all the materials I used for my prep.
INTRO -
I am an Offshore Structural Engineering and worked with Larsen & Toubro - India’s largest energy infrastructure company having an experience of 5 yrs and 8 months in the Oil and Gas sector. My main functions were Design engineering and Project management.
Attempt 1:
I embarked on this arduous journey around may 2016. After some research I took
e-GMAT English course for my studies. To sum up the course, I would suggest to take it only for Sentence Correction module. The approach that is taught to tackle a SC question is really helpful. However the RC section is average and CR was not of much help.
For quant, I only followed Manhattan Red book along with GMATCLUB quant. The book is an ensemble of tough questions and is more than sufficient to master quant. With an average prep and 2 mocks I gave my first attempt on 22 Aug 16. With no surprises I got 600 only - Q48, V24.
Attempt 2-3:
After a long break, I once again started my preparations in April 2017. This time around I did not take any study material and only used GMAT CLUB for my preparations. I focused on my verbal and explored unlimited questions in GMATCLUB

along with OG. I solved all the OG questions and used to refer to the explanations given by experts in GMATCLUB. This approach really improved my verbal. For practice I used to solve 'Question of the Day thread' and timer questions in forums.
For CR, I used Power Score Bible (A fantastic book) and then I practiced in GMATCLUB to build upon the concepts read in the book.
For RC, Lectures from Thursdays with Ron were really helpful.
With this new vigour, I gave GMAT once again (Oct 17) and scored 650 Q44, V37. A big dip in quant really lowered my score. In hindsight, I did not really focus on quant.
As I intended to apply by the round 2 in B schools, I wanted to quickly improve my Quant. So I took
EMPOWERGMAT for quant. The course is well laid down and it helped me with some tricks and strategies as to how to approach certain math problems. One of the biggest take-backs was how the course enabled me to
approach the exam as a whole i.e. whether to leave a question etc. The english course is average.
I gave GMAT once again (Jan 17). To my surprise I scored a dismal 660 Q47, V35.
I missed the deadlines of IIM A,B,C and only applied to ISB, NTU and XLRI. I got into XLRI with 660 score and did not convert ISB or NTU.
Attempt 4 - Final Attempt as time was running out:
This time around I followed the same strategy as for attempt 2 with minor tweaks. I relied heavily on GMATCLUB and test series of MANHATTAN and GMATCLUB. I did lot of practice through GMATCLUB and used to revise concepts daily on the website. I did this for around 4 months along with weekly mock test tests and GMATCLUB question bank.
To apply for Round 1 deadlines I decided to give the GMAT on 22 Aug 19 (Exactly 2 yrs from my first attempt). I
scored 690 Q47,V37. May be I could have done a little better in quant but I was happy with my score.
I applied to all the above schools as mentioned earlier and will tell more about that part in next post about the help taken for Application.
SUMMARY -
1) EGMAT - Rating - 2.5/5 - Only good for English. I recommend only SC.
2) EMPOWERGMAT - Rating 3/5 - Very good for Math. Well laid and helps in approaching at a problem and exam as a whole. Brownie point - Very honest about the refund policy.
3) MANHATTAN Test series - Rating - 4/5 - Highly recommended. The series on the tougher side but It excellent for temperament building. Though don't get discouraged by the atrociously tough quant problems.
4) GMATCLUB - Rating 5/5 - the game changer - Highly recommended. One will not find a better free material on GMAT any where else in the world. One just need to know how to extract from it. Apart form this the GMATCLUB test series and its question bank is wonderful.
5) Thursdays with RON - Rating 4/5 - Again if one needs to understand concepts, this is one platform to go to. One word -Amazing.
6) OG - An irreplaceable resouce. Analyse each question to its depth
Disclaimer - this is only my personal opinion and is subjective. But do try out GMATCLUB and Thursdays with Ron.
PERSEVERANCE is the Key.
