I agree with you...all top business schools have a range of 650-750 for GMAT scores....so, a person with a 650 can not be ruled out... But, the people on lower end of the score spectrum generally have stellar CVs.....like "i worked in the FBI and decoded the encryption used by the Drug cartel" or "i worked for 2 years on a nuclear submarine and only had 2 near death experiences"

More often than not, Indian applicats are ........a similar set of people with similar qualifications and experience........how do you differentiate?? everyone is hardworking, an over-achiever and pretty creative...GMAT scores help to cut out a diverse class....

let me know if i am mistaken....my purpose was to encourage njvenkatesh so that he doesn't underestimate his competition!
Hello Jockey,

It might be beneficial if we don't stereotype folks. Someone can score below 700 and still get to the top-schools.

Also it might not be an ethnic issue. It could be that a similar set of people isn't able to provide a USP.

Please advise in case I'm wrong.
I do not feel it is appropriate to call Dallas Jockey's remark as ethinic one. If you see the posts in ask accepted.com forum you will find that Paul always suggests that Indian engineer with 5+ years of experience in IT industry and GMAT 700+ is not a distinct profile. Academic achievement are rewardly heavily back in India, but they are not that heavily rewarded in the institutes in other parts of the world. Finally academic achievements can not be only criterion for good business manager on the same line just being with FBI also does not gurantee adnission. Definitely higher GMAT helps but top scholls like HBS, Kellogg, Stanford looks much beyond GMAT. Otherwise their average GMAT in these institutes would have been 750+.
If nvvenkatesh feels that 600+ is ok with him he must have different targets, and different expectations from MBA degree. Finally what you want to get MBA degree more important. As per as guidance related to verbal is concerned Dallas Jockey has gives good tips. Follow it our best wishes are with you.

Of course! I am absolutely positive that Dallas meant well!

What I meant that (and this has been explained well by Praveen) is that it is the lack of people's ability to bring themselves out of the "typical" category that, IMO, is the issue. I don't think being an American or not being an Indian helps anyone in their b-school applications. Whoever presents his/her case well is going to go through.

Jockey you are right. If someone has a lower GMAT s/he needs to make it up BIG TIME - could be GPA, work-ex etc, charitable work etc. Venki might have a stellar resume! We don't know. Let's hope he does!

Venki - go all the way man!

Thanks jockey. Thanks pravin. Absolutely no offences meant! :)

I know only one (someone with the username 'goforisb' in ST forums). That guy got 720 last year, and reappeared this year to get a 750.

That example isn't relevant to this discussion though.

The point is what all schools njvenkatesh is targetting. There's a lot more to be known about his profile and his dream-schools before commenting anything on the prospects of him getting into B-schools with (relatively) low GMAT scores.

Looks like princeton scoring pattern closely matches with the actual one though the questions are easier than the actual one.

That may have happened for you. But don't rely on the correlation working again. I have seen great discrepancies in my practice test scores v/s the real GMAT score. It also matters how easy you take the practice tests to be -- are you under the same stress conditions?

njvenkatesh

I have Manhattan Sentence correction, Kaplan Set, OG 11, OG verbal extension.

I strongly recommend Manhattan SC guide along with OG11. The other material may help you, but Manhattan + OG is the combination I'd recommend.

njvenkatesh

I took a day off on Friday and Monday and kept brushing up the basics, not sure whther it has anything to do with my poor performance. But my average is 600. Most of the people advised not to study anything on the test day and the day before. Not sure whether this has to do anything with my poor performance.

I also spent the last 2 days before GMAT doing a lot. But didn't brush up on basics. Rather, I reviewed all important types of questions, and also sat for 1 Manhattan Practice Test (it did help me).

I also recommend that you spend few hours reading articles at economist.com and americanscientist.org - the writing style may influence how you see sentence correction.
