Hi all,

I took the GMAT for the first time on 6/20 and scored a 680 (Q44/ V38). This was the lowest verbal score I've ever received on Verbal on a CAT and below what I was aiming for in Quant. In the course of my studies, I took 9 full-length CATS. 7 of them were from Princeton Review (averaging around 690 in score) and the final 2 I took in the week leading up the test were the Official Practice Tests 1 & 2 in which I scored 730 (Q48/V42) and 720 (Q46/V44). I was hoping these 700+ scores were a more accurate representation of my ability, but maybe I was wrong!

The next available exam is July 25th and I'm ready to spend the next month working towards a 720+ score. I'd love any advice you could offer in terms of the best strategies and tools for tackling a retake.

My test prep up until this point has included a 27-hour Princeton Review online course, consistent 20-25hr+ study weeks for the past 3 months (mainly focused on OG problems), and weekly full-length CATs.

Key questions:
1. I just received the official ESR. Any tips on the best way to analyze this data? Honestly, from my perspective, it doesn't look like I did half bad and should've scored 700+ but I'd love an expert's opinion and where the issues were with my test day performance / plans for improvement.
2. If I hope to take 4 more CATS (one per week over the next month), which CATs should I utilize if I have exhausted all of Princeton Review's and Tests 1 & 2 from GMAC. I'd prefer free options, but will spend if I need to for accurate assessments.
3. I've always considered Verbal my strong suit and been worried about Quant all along. Is verbal generally harder on the real exam or did I make some silly errors? Should I focus my attention equally on verbal and quant moving forward if I'm aiming for V44+ Q48+?

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated!

In you final GMAT exam, you have got 44 in quant that is not an outstanding score in quant. There has a scope to increase your total GMAT score by improving your quant score. You can give GMAT club tests in which quant section is highly enriched and while appearing GMAT club tests, you must find out where you make mistakes in quant section and do the similar math problem from the club. Hopeful, by doing so, you can expect 50 in quant.

Best of luck of your next endeavor and hopeful in this time you will be able to get your desired score.

If the comment helps you what you need to know, do not leave without giving +1 kudos.

Hi studybuddy,

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT. The good news is that 680 is not a bad start, so don’t beat yourself up over that score. Regarding your questions:

1. To be honest, the sample size of data in any given GMAT is quite limited (31 quant and 36 verbal questions), so you shouldn’t base your study plan just on the data from your ESR. That said, your ESR could help for verbal because you can see your percentiles for CR, SC, and RC. Do you have that information? If so, do you see a clear weak area in verbal?

2. You should take the remaining 4 official GMAC practice exams. You should not need more than those 4 exams.

3. I think that you should focus on both quant and verbal moving forward. Of course, if you want specific advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach out.
