Hi guys,
i just had a pretty horrible experience with my first attempt in gmat online exam.
The checkin process was quite comfortable but the test day anxiety and certain pitfalls in quant took a toll on my T day performance.
I ended up scoring a 590 Q42 V29  :|
My score just crashed down given my 6 months of rigourous preparation and a consistant 740+ in my gmatprep mocks

background and prep materials
I started my preparation mid april 2020 and was quite consistant in my preparation, studying almost 21 hours a week.

study materials
quants
1.GMAT quantitative mega thread from gmat club
2.VeritasKarishma notes
3.target test prep
quants was initially my weakest area but TTP and veritas karishma notes helped me with that.
I completely relied on gmatclub practice questions using filters to practice depending upon the difficulty, I mostly used only official questions for my prep.

verbal
1.manhattan SC AND CR
2.GMATNinja SC videos
I was quite strong in verbal from the start of my prep, but V29 was a real hit.
I practiced manhattan questions and official questions in GMATCLUB and OG2018.

TEST DAY EXPERIENCE
The checkin process was quite elobrate since I chose to use a physical white board.
The first question of quant was quite tough not the typical sub 600 ones I get in my mocks.I believed that the first 10 questions played a significant role in my quant score and ended up spending 3.5 mins on the first question and still ended up guessing, the anxiety started to buildup right from there.
I was quite struggling to manage time and I felt the questions were a tougher than the ones I faced during my prep.
Im not sure if any one else have felt the same way about the quant session of gmat online or maybe I a got tougher ques set :?
I some how managed to reach the last question with 2 mins left, I dont know if it was a problem from my side but the quants window closed and the verbal session started almost immediately.
I ended up leaving the last question unanswered. :dazed
Having read in certain articles that leaving a question unanswered can severely impact a score ,I felt grounded.
This anxiety was carried over to my verbal session, as I struggled to concentrate and recognize the traps, but still I felt quite satisfied with my verbal performance.
my scores were published today and I feel stranded.

GMAT PREP MOCKS
gmatprep 1 -740 Q50 V40
gmatprep 2- 760 Q51 V41
gmatprep 3- 750 Q51 V40
gmatprep 4- 750 Q50 V42
I took these mocks in the last 2 months with a physical whiteboard.
I fell so devastrated by seeing the 100+ points drop in my official score. Im not sure if anxiety could lead to such a fall or if I had other gaps in my knowledge that needs to be addressed.
Im concerned about what pattern of preparation I had to follow right now and when to schedule my next exam.
my target score is 720+, im not sure how to bridge this gap in the next exam.
Experts kindly help me with your inputs on how I should improve my score.
Also Please give me your perspectives on why I was not able to match my target score and when I should possibly schedule my second attempt.

Thankyou for reading through my debrief.

I am not an expert by any means but adding my two cents here -

I have taken both the test center GMAT and the online GMAT and scored the same but noticed that I was struggling with Quant in the online GMAT. I too found the questions just a bit more difficult. I think your quant took a hit because you took 3.5 mins per question in the beginning and probably made a lot of consecutive mistakes towards the end. Leaving just one question unanswered in the end is fine.

Since you were satisfied with your verbal performance, its hard to say what went wrong. Maybe you were mentally exhausted from the Quant performance and didn't realize.

If you took your mocks without breaks and did not see repeated questions then you just need a timing strategy and a good day to score 720+. GMAT Prep mocks are very accurate and this kind of deviation is an outlier. You should rest for a few days, revise your notes, maybe take few more mocks and take the test again if you feel confident.

Hi Madhumitha2939,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. Many GMATers experience some anxiety on Test Day - so you are not alone. While the details that you describe likely did throw-off your performance a bit, we have to be careful about assuming that those were the only reasons why you scored lower on the Official GMAT. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) Over the last 1-2 months, did you increase the number of study hours each week or were you sticking to about 20 hours a week?
2) Did you work through any other study materials (practice sets, books, etc.) besides the ones that you listed?
3) Did you take just those 4 practice CATs/mocks or were there any others? On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

I appreciate you reaching out and sharing your thoughts, and I’d like to help you get on the right track. In order to do so, it would be helpful to see exactly how much progress you made in TTP. Would you be able to post an image of your TTP Analytics page? The image does not need to contain any personal information but be sure that it shows your course progress.

Once I get a clear picture of your course analytics, I can provide some further advice. In the meantime, I'll reach out to you directly, so we can figure out what is going on.

A consistent 750 in practice tests and 590 in actual GMAT is rare. Get your ESR and see what took you down. A review of the practice tests won't be of much help in identifying your weaknesses because there aren't too many, I suspect.
Perhaps all you need is a dose of confidence, knowing what to expect (the first question can very well be a toughie) and a good day!

I'm sorry to hear about this experience. Were you practicing the GMAT prep exams with the Online Whiteboard? I found that this helped me immeasurably when I went to take the test.
