Hi everyone,
Firstly I would like to thank the amazing contributors of this forum (Bunuel, GMATNinja) for their helpful posts and GMATNinja in particular for his videos.
I appeared for the Indian CAT exam on 29th Nov, 2020 and the GMAT on 28th Dec, 2020. I had prepared extensively for the CAT exam but am not confident about my performance on the test (expecting to be around the 95th - 98th percentile which isn't the best in the context of top Indian B-Schools). However, the light at the end of this horrible 2020 experience has come in the form of a pretty killer GMAT score - 770 with a split of Q50, V45, and IR 8
For the GMAT, I prepared almost exclusively from the OG and the added Quant Review book, while also watching Youtube videos and solving the odd question on GMATClub as well. I solved every question in the OG and made a note of my errors, making sure not to repeat them. I approached verbal with an intuitive and logical framework rather than a rule-based system, as that's the way my brain is wired at this point. Verbal has generally always been an area of strength for me and I did not find the actual exam to be very challenging in terms of the Verbal content.
I gave two official GMAT Prep tests a couple of days before the exam with the following splits:
1) 770 (Q51, V44, IR 5)
2) 780 (Q51, V47, IR 5)
As you can see, the practice tests were an almost perfect estimate of my ability level on test day. I definitely think that studying for the CAT exam which tests quant at a significantly higher level than the GMAT contributed to my comfort while taking the GMAT, but there are certainly a few beautifully crafted questions in the OG that can blow anyone's socks off.
My practice IR scores were horrible owing to some stupid mistakes, so I worked on IR pretty heavily the day before the exam, and managed an 8 on the actual test. My quant score took a hit and fell to Q50 due to some silly errors. It hurt even more because I had figured out how to solve those tricky questions once I had completed the exam haha.
Good luck to all fellow GMAT takers! Its a beautiful exam and it was a great experience preparing for it!!
