Well, my background left me with a much different starting point for verbal, so maybe another member could comment on getting a good foundation for verbal. I have read a lot of good things about the
Manhattan GMAT books for verbal preparation. I used the OG11 and the old paper tests myself and found them to be very helpful. The SC1000 and CR1000 available here on this site are great if you want to go through a lot of questions. And the verbal forum here at GMATclub is great. If you participate, read the explanations given by others and write explanations of your own, you will start to see the pattern of things that they look for on the real thing.
I would highly recommend NOT using the Kaplan guides for verbal. Their questions are not structured like the real thing, and the question logic is often flawed, and not representative of what you need to know for the real thing.
