Hey guys,
I've been trying to conquer this beast since the beginning of the year. I had my first attempt in March and scored a lousy 620. I knew I could do better but I didn't really start studying again until around July. I decided to set my 2nd attempt at the end of August and I studied furiously for two months. I recorded a dismal 650 on the second attempt. The very next day I signed up for earliest test date I could get and I finally finished my 3rd attempt today.
By this time I was familiar with the format and feel of the test and nerves were not a factor. In the month prior to this last attempt all I studied was Verbal, mainly SC and CR. I became much more confident but it did not show. I only scored 1 point higher on Verbal. Surprisingly, I went from a 47 to a 49 in Q and I initially thought I reach my apex in Q, which is why I only focused on V. Go figure.
AWA
This is was normal, I had a standard template and I scored 5.5's on both my previous attempts. I wrote down all the starting sentances of the paragraphs and used that as the outline. Then I filled in the paragraphs with supporting material.
Math
I thought this section was easier then last time. But I was not smart on time. I ended up rushing through the last 6 questions in about 8-9 minutes. I tired hard to not make any careless mistakes on any of the questions and it drained quite a bit of time. In retrospect, if I had tried to finish each question within a certain time range, I would have surely goofed up on many questions. The questions I got were very similar to the ones posted in the forum here. What really helped me were the explanations by others on many questions. The difficulty level on the exam is not very high, the main problem is really time constraints. Be sure to learn your standard problems on rate, mixture, slope, percentages, simultaneous equations and number theory. I got one problem on probability, but it was really easy. I also got two problems on absolute value. I think emphasis needs to be placed on number theory in learning about absolute values, divisibility, sum of numbers, and factoring.
Verbal
This section started off with 3 SC's and each were more difficult then the previous. I really thought I was doing well. The RC's were getting longer, the CRs were getting tougher. The SC's, which I practiced the most, seemed to be medium difficulty. I almost always deduced to one choice. I had about 5 minutes remaining by the time I finished the last question. I guess I rushed through the initial questions, but it did not seem like it. For verbal, I studied
MGMAT, PR and the forums very rigorously. I think Verbal is one of those things you really can't learn. But thats my opinion. I've been trying to grasp verbal for the past several months and I am native speaker. I simply cannot understand why I'm having so much diificulty.
Anyways, in retrospect, I struggled hard to finally reach the 90% range. There soo many instances when I just wanted to give up. There were even times when I thought to myself I'll apply to schools with less stricter requirements. But this was not what i really wanted. I have been truly inspired by this forum and by all the wonderful posts about preserverence and struggles. This, along with my family support, is what trully kept me ticking.
And for those of you that have scored much lower then your targets, I want to tell you that luck has more to do with your score then you might think. I improved 40 points, mainly through Q, within one month and all I studied was V.
Don't give up, if you know deep down you can do better. Thanks and good luck to those who are taking their GMAT soon.
