Hello,
I took the GMAT online test today and scored a very disappointing 650 (Q48, V32, IR4). It is a little shocking since I have been consistently scoring 700 and above in the last 4 GmatPrep tests. I was aiming for about 700. The verbal part is especially disappointing. I don't think I was nervous or anxious. I struggled with timing though and I felt more stuck on questions than usual. Verbal felt easier than quant. After seeing my score, it makes sense why.
I am looking for advice on - (1) whether to retake the test (I think yes) (2) should I use a course to tackle my weak spots? .
I plan to apply to R1 of the Haas EWMBA (part time) program and Wharton's EMBA program, so I want to target last week of September or 1st week of October for my retake. I understand that this is a tight timeline but I do not want to get prep fatigue.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can improve? .
The only difference between my practice tests and actual test was that I guessed on the last 3/4 questions on Verbal in the actual test (I'm not sure why I did that since it wasn't my strategy). I never guessed on any verbal (or quant) questions during the practice tests. I took all practice tests under test conditions and did all 4 sections each time. I primarily used OG, OG Verbal Review, OG Advanced questions for the prep (though I had time to do just 30% of the hard level questions in Verbal) and
Manhattan Prep Verbal, GMATNinja YouTube SC videos (Thank you!) for verbal theory. I also used the 5 day trial offered by
Target Test Prep about 2 weeks before the test date. Would have probably signed up for the full course if I had known about it earlier during my prep!
My accuracy in easy and medium level questions was 85% and higher though I did not keep a tab on the time. I did just a couple of GmatClub 700 level quant quizzes (due to lack of time) and did not do well. I knew going into the test that Quant might be 47-49 but did not expect to tank so badly in Verbal.
My GMAT Prep test scores are below:
1. GMAT Prep 1 - 640 (Q49, V28, IR5) - Without any preparation in May 2021
2. GMAT Prep 2 - 680 (Q47, V36, IR5) - A month later after doing OG Easy and a few Medium level problems (studied on and off to get an idea)
3. GMAT Prep 3 - 700 (Q49, V35, IR7) - July 25, 2021
4. GMAT Prep 4 - 710 (Q49, V36, IR7) - Aug 8, 2021
5. GMAT Prep 5 - 730 (Q50, V39, IR6) - Aug 11, 2021
6. GMAT Prep 6 - 730 (Q48, V41, IR7) - Aug 13, 2021
GMAT Actual Test - 650 (Q48, V32, IR4) - Aug 15, 2021
Studied quite a lot in the 3 weeks leading up to the test but only on and off before that. My prep was quite unstructured and ad hoc. I did OG verbal easy and half of medium levels before reading through the fundamentals. Practiced hard level questions in the last 2 weeks. Did not do much of quant beyond OG and OG Advanced since my background is in engineering (Bachelors, Masters & PhD in engineering with a lot of advanced math), so I thought it would be ok. Looks like I overestimated my ability in both sections.
The GMAT online experience - It went very smoothly except for some audio issues before the test. The proctor was very nice and polite. I would definitely recommend the online version for those without any internet issues. I asked the proctor if lip movement is considered as talking and she clarified that as long as I don't make any sound, it is ok to read the questions to myself noiselessly.
Will appreciate any advice or suggestions! Thank you in advance!
